Smarter Highway Inspections with the ZIYAN F15 Unmanned Helicopter and Intelligent Docking Station

2026-11-04

As highway networks continue to expand, maintaining road safety and responding quickly to incidents have become increasingly demanding. Conventional vehicle patrols can be time-consuming, particularly when inspecting long road sections or responding to incidents in areas with limited access.

In Guangxi, China, the ZIYAN F15 unmanned helicopter, paired with an intelligent docking station, is helping improve highway inspection efficiency through aerial patrols and automated operations.

Highway Inspection Drone

A More Efficient Approach to Highway Patrols

Highway management teams need to monitor a wide range of conditions, including abnormal traffic, road debris, unauthorized lane occupation, roadworks, and unexpected incidents. Identifying these issues quickly is essential to maintaining traffic flow and ensuring road safety.

Traditional ground patrols often require vehicles to travel along the road section, with personnel stopping when potential hazards are identified. This can take considerable time and may expose inspection teams to roadside traffic risks.

The ZIYAN F15 provides a more flexible aerial inspection option. Equipped with a loudspeaker and searchlight, it can support daytime and nighttime patrols, illuminate areas of interest, deliver remote voice announcements, and assist with traffic warnings and guidance.

By providing an elevated view of the road, the F15 enables operators to identify potential issues from the air and hover over specific locations for closer observation, reducing the need for frequent roadside stops.

Unmanned Helicopter,

Faster Inspections, Greater Operational Safety

During the project, the F15 demonstrated a clear efficiency advantage in routine highway patrols.

For a 15-kilometer road section, an F15 patrol typically takes approximately 20–30 minutes. When additional hovering and observation are required, the mission can be completed in around 40 minutes. By comparison, a conventional vehicle patrol may take more than one hour.

This aerial approach helps inspection teams cover road sections more efficiently while reducing personnel exposure to roadside traffic.

Designed for demanding industrial operations, the F15 offers up to 100 minutes of flight endurance, a maximum payload capacity of 5 kg, Level 8 wind resistance, and a video transmission range of up to 30 km. Its payload flexibility also allows operators to configure the aircraft for different inspection and emergency-response tasks.

Intelligent Drone Docking Station

Automated Operations with an Intelligent Docking Station

The intelligent docking station takes highway inspection a step further by enabling automated, remotely managed operations.

Once an inspection route and mission parameters are configured, the system can dispatch the F15 remotely. The aircraft autonomously takes off, follows its planned route, and returns to the docking station after completing the mission.

Upon landing, the docking station supports automatic charging, data transmission, remote communication, and equipment status monitoring. This integrated workflow reduces the need for on-site personnel to handle routine flight operations and helps establish a more continuous inspection process.

By combining the F15 with the intelligent docking station, highway operators can build a more responsive and scalable aerial inspection system.

Beyond Routine Patrols: Supporting Highway Infrastructure Monitoring

The F15 platform also offers potential for more advanced infrastructure monitoring applications.

When integrated with suitable SAR payloads and InSAR data processing capabilities, unmanned helicopter systems can support the monitoring of slope deformation and other potential geological risks along highways. This provides an additional technical option for infrastructure assessment, particularly in mountainous and geologically complex areas.

Making Highway Inspections More Intelligent

The Guangxi project demonstrates how unmanned helicopter systems and intelligent docking stations can improve the efficiency, flexibility, and safety of highway inspection operations.

From routine aerial patrols and nighttime warnings to automated mission execution and potential infrastructure monitoring, the ZIYAN F15 provides a versatile platform for intelligent highway management.

As low-altitude technology continues to develop, automated unmanned helicopter systems are set to play an increasingly important role in the digital transformation of transportation infrastructure.
